Offering this 10 week class in our ceramics studios! This class is available for advanced students that have taken at least four ceramics classes at CMA or have received instructor approval to take the class. Form, surface design, glazing, and firing will be explored in greater depth during this class. Advanced students who have taken five or more CMA ceramics classes or working at a level determined to be advanced by the instructor will be required to do their own firing in cooperation with the Canton Ceramic Artists Guild to deepen their understanding of the process.

Advanced ceramics students are now eligible for independent study at CMA! This option is available for a limited number of students who have taken at least three ceramics classes at CMA. Your registration fee provides access to the studio during all open studio hours, a locker for storage, access to studio tools and equipment, and a professional teaching artist mentor available to get you set up and answer any questions via email. Studio hours run from 9/29/24 - 12/15/24 (Minus adjusted hours due to museum closures) which coincides with our ceramics class schedule. Students with ceramics experience outside of CMA are not eligible for registration, as students need a strong working knowledge of CMA studio safety and procedures.

Learn the fundamentals of an ancient art form: glass fusing. Cut, design and fuse glass in a kiln using an original design or ideas supplied by the instructor. Glass plates, bowls and jewelry are discussed in this series. All skill levels are welcome. Ages 18+.

Create and wear a silver pendant with a cabochon stone setting. This series teaches design basics, metalsmithing techniques (soldering, cutting, bezel setting), jewelers’ techniques (hot/cold connections, sawing, forming, stone setting). If you have taken this class before, make a companion piece to match. All skill levels are welcome. Ages 18+.

Explore the Japanese pottery design techniques of mixing (neri), pressing into (komi), and pulling up (age) in a combined process of laminating colored clay by hand and on the wheel to create unique marbleized patterns and layered surface design. Prerequisite: Advanced students who have completed (3) wheel throwing classes. Ages 18+. Registration includes clay and tools.

Once young students begin to trust the process of transforming their ideas into something tangible, they can gradually be introduced to new raw materials and techniques, and navigate their own creative journey. If your young artist has an hour or so to spare, recharge and reset at the museum!

Develop a new appreciation for quieting the mind and training the eye to frame objects into meaningful compositions. Drawing from life serves as the foundation for other art mediums. This drawing series focuses on personalizing your still life objects, playing with size to construct a tiny composition, drawing in the dark to better understand value, light and shadow, and expressive linework with unique mark-making tools. Ages 18+. Registration includes drawing tools, paper, and sketchbooks.

Connect with history, cultural trends, and societal values through a visual thinking lens. Studying art history encourages critical thinking skills, artistic behavior, and holistic learning by incorporating other subject areas. Ages 10+ with an adult caretaker. Registration includes an object-based visual literacy lesson in the galleries and an art-making experience led by a teaching artist in the studio classroom.

Create your own fused glass dish or bowl. Basic glass cutting techniques and assembling using precut glass are discussed in this workshop. A bowl design and form is easily achieved without cutting any glass. Dish size is approximately 4 inches. All skill levels are welcome. Work will be ready for pick up in approximately 3 weeks.
